In 1932, Herman W. Lay started a small business in Nashville, Tennessee selling potato chips made by a company in Atlanta, Georgia. Six years later Herman bought that company to form H. W. Lay & Company.
In 1944, Herman simplified the company’s name to the one we all know today: Lay’s® Potato Chips and became the first snack food company to advertise on television.
Lay’s® potato chips crossed the border into Canada in 1962 and won over Canadians with their crispy and guaranteed fresh taste. By 1997, Lay’s® potato chips became a favourite choice for Canadians and are considered Canada’s favourite potato chip brand to this day. In keeping with Herman’s innovative spirit and dedication to quality, the Lay’s® brand now offers consumers many different types of chips - including regular, wavy and kettle cooked potato chips - in over 22 flavours.
Lay’s® potato chips continue to be made with quality, homegrown Canadian potatoes. Simple, wholesome and real. After carefully washing, peeling and slicing the potatoes, we cook them until they are perfectly crispy, bringing out the wonderful potato taste that Canadians know and love.
